Monday, 2/21 -- More fun.

Today was the swallowing test with the speech pathologist. They wanted to make sure that I wasn't aspirating on my food and spit.

Guess what? I am.

Long story short (because I'm tired)
They are suggesting a feeding tube (PEG Tube) be surgically inserted into my stomach because my throat muscles are now too weak to guard against aspiration.

They say it would be a temporary thing. Just until my strength returned. As soon as my throat muscles get strong enough to handle swallowing AND breathing, they'd take out the PEG feeding tube. Until then, food would be something injected directly into my gut through the abdomen. I would not be eating or drinking anything by mouth.

If I get food and spit into my lungs, I could very easily develop pneumonia. That would be really bad in my present physical condition.

No final decisions have been made. We'll talk it all over with the oncologists tomorrow.

We'll see.

I'm off to the couch.
By the way, I'm having a very hard time speaking because of this condition. My throat is all kinds of messed up.

The above will take you to a site that has been proven to be extremely powerful. Keep the faith and your will get stronger. Seems like it is a high hill at this time but when you look back, you will say it was worth it.

Hey Eric. I just got your blog from Bob. Thanks for setting this up and letting us all know what is going on.

Just imagine the time-saving aspects of a feeding tube! Chewing is totally overrated anyway and combined with your cooking creativity, there may indeed be an untapped market for tube-based dinners (no sticky fingers, total packaging savings for the environment, great for active lifestyles) Very Buck Rogers indeed.

Hang in there, Squid Pickles (which, BTW, I think can be made PEG-friendly). You know that you and Lyn remain in my thoughts...constantly. I, and the many others who love you so, are pulling for you. I'll keep sending you positive thoughts and healing energy. Remember the breathing... :) ~Your Personal Yogi

Just checking in, it's been kind of quiet this week. I'm with Bob and Coose on the whole puree thing. Just think of the recipes for your other site; dozens of complex, intricately designed recipes that take hours to complete and all ending with "Puree. Insert PEG tube. Serves 6." Take care.
